I somehow think that the Cybermats have had their day. I mean, if you look at what they did during their appearances in "Tomb of the Cybermen," "The Wheel in Space" and "Revenge of the Cybermen," it doesn't amount to very much.
In "Tomb of the Cybermen" for example, all the Cybermats did was crawl at a snail's pace into the upper levels of the Cybermen's city (where the Doctor, Jamie, Victoria and the team of archaeologists were) and make a rather dismal bleeping sound, flashing their protruding eyes while moving their mandibles. The Doctor was able to destroy the Cybermats extremely easily and without too much bother, using a power cable to create an intense electromagnetic field that disrupted the Cybermat's control circuits.
In "The Wheel in Space," the Cybermats again moved at a snail's pace and actually appeared to be vaguely threatening, using a powerful bolt of energy discharged from their bulging eyes to kill a human. However, once again, they were hardly gifted with the destructive power of the Daleks...
And in "Revenge of the Cybermen," the Cybermats moved yet again at a snail's pace but at least this time they could jump up at an enemy! This time they appeared slightly more menacing than in their previous story, but the Doctor was able to reprogram a Cybermat to carry gold-dust instead of a deadly poison which he then used to destroy a Cyberman and seriously injure another Cyberman. Hardly the stuff of nightmares...
You may think I am cynical about Doctor Who, but I'm not. I adore the series and really am very interested in the whole mythology of it, but I just think that the Cybermats were really never developed to their full potential and could be defeated so easily. It's a shame because they looked promising in "Tomb of the Cybermen" and could have been really fantastic creatures, but I guess the writers of the later stories couldn't think of a really good use for them, and then there was the poor special effects which hampered so many a good Doctor Who story in the old days...

I sort of picture a new version of the Cybermat like a cross between a Facehugger from Alien and the metal spiders from 'The End of the World' - doesn't look scary at first, but when it tries to jump on you... eeeeek!

That would be cool... especially if they had scorpion stings.
My ideal use for Cybermats would be as a preliminary infiltration force... little gribblies taking out as many people as they can before the Cybermen come along and give the surviors a damn good shoeing.

And I'd also advise any spoiler-phobes to completely avoid The Sun today - there's a bit of a huge revelation they've given away, the rotters.

...and being a spoiler-whore I'm going to run off and find a copy.
Cybermats- I can never take them seriously, on account of someone once suggesting that if cybermen were mechanised humans, cybermats must be mechanised rodents. Cyberhamsters, anyone?

I, too, am a spoiler whore but I forgot to get the Sun yesterday... any chance of somebody in the know dropping a message to my PS or resurrecting the Doctor Who Spoilers thread?

I noticed the Spoiler thread had been resurrected. I had to avert my eyes and find the 'unsubscribe' link by touch so as to remain unspoiled.

CYBERHUMAN Posted Nov 13, 2005
I'm afraid the new Cybermen are bitterly disappointing. The heads are quite good and reminiscent of the heads of the Cybermen seen in the era of the Second Doctor, but the body is far too chunky and segmented, looking more like a suit of armour than actual cybernetic parts surgically attached to the body. They look too robotic, and I hope that in the two episodes in which they will be appearing in the new series, we get to see something of the humanoid material within them. Otherwise I fear the new fans will grow up thinking that the Cybermen are purely robots, not half-humanoid, half-mechanical cyborgs as we old fans all know is the case. I also hope that their voices, weaponry and movement will make up for their distinctly poor design.
