Was it? Personally, I felt it was more than that, as it involved a discussion of the real relationship between the Doctor and his Companions.

As interesting as that might be in the context of Doctor Who, that still doesn´t help it deserve an award.

Well, that is better then. I would say that Fireplace was an excellent story too, it deserves the award.
