To help indicate irony. Also a smiley to indicate that one is not bothered either way - especially for PR situations.

Your tongue in cheek smiley tends to be substituted with most of the time. As for the whatever, I'm not entirely convinced of its usefulness...

I just think its an aspect of non-verbal communication that its difficult to get across sometimes - a kind of this is my opinion but if you feel strongly the other way then well whatever...
People sometimes assume that everything that someone has bothered to write down in PR, they feel strongly about. In some of the more passionate debates we have had recently, that can be a problem.
Anyway, I don't feel that strongly about this one either so I'll leave it there!

No - don't leave it there! If you think it's useful, then keep at it - I campaigned for ages with loads of people for a ! What I say is also just my opinion - and is supposed to be phrased to sound like that. Good luck!

Oh I don't know Whoami? I think that they sound interesting ideas. But I am unsure what they would look like. Any ideas?

good question
For the one I guess one way to do it would be a smiley with shrugged shoulders, a kind of palms upwards, neutral gesture. When people do this gesture they also generally raise their eyebrows so maybe that could be built in.
I am not sure how easy that would be to do within the constraints of smiley design though.
For the smiley, a solution could be to keep it quite literal - a smiley with a bulging cheek and a bit of a wink. Whoami is right that it is similar to the one. Its added value would be to say unambiguously I am being ironic here - please don't take my comment seriously. I can think of a few conversations recently I have seen where this would have avoided ruffled feathers...

I was sent here because I asked for a tongue in cheek smiley and would like to put in a further requisition for same. Although I had no idea that there was a deadline for smiley applications, someone pointed out that this one had been asked for before the deadline.
If any smiley was ever needed for a purpose and not just for a lark, then it's definitely this one. And I see no overlapping with the winkeye smiley - for me they are as different in meaning and use as chalk and cheese.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen

I agree - winkeye is ambiguous - tongue in cheek is clear.

The reason it wasn't added to the list was no one had come up with an idea of how it would actually look, but as Mina has shouted and I am now deaf in my left ear, I guess I could add it to the list.

Thank you - as I said elsewhere, I can't see any problem with the design, it's a real classic and should have been here right from the start. The whole idea of smileys, surely, is to say "I don't mean this literally"
