One should not temper with Fantômas smiley - bat! He was a (fictitious) murderer and thief, not a movie director. The movies which influenced René Magritte are adapted from the novels by Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain (written towards 1913) and were directed by Louis Feuillade. They have been released as DVD's a couple of years ago (don't know whether they're still available, however).
