This is Week Forty Seven of Giford's Bible Study Programme.

Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets1: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

- Matt 5:17-19

It is a fundamental of Christianity that Jesus introduced a New Testament, and that therefore the moral (or at least the ritual) laws of the Old Testament no longer apply. That is why Christians do not need to be circumcised and why slavery is no longer allowed. They can point to verses in the New Testament where Jesus supports this interpretation - especially the writings of Peter.

Jesus, however, expressly denies this. For the Jesus of the Gospels, God's one and only covenant with his people stands for all time.

1The Jews divide the Old Testament into the Torah ('Law' or 'Teachings'), Prophets and Writings.
