Viewing H2G2 on a WAP phone
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
Since the tragic loss of the WAP* version of the Guide, I've been hoping that somebody would come up with an HTML to WML* gateway. Something like the WAP emulator at Wapsilon but in reverse. Well joy of joys, I've found one!
It's actually part of Google's WAP search engine which allows you to search the entire web from your phone and will display the text of any web page that returns a match as a series of WAP 'cards'. Pictures of course are not displayed.
Go to the WAP version of Google at wap.google.com, select 'search options' then 'go to URL*'. Enter the address you're after and click 'Go'. If your phone has a way of setting a bookmark on the page you are viewing, you're laughing. If you need to type in the address manually, read on.
The address for the WAPped version of the guide is http://wmlproxy.google.com/wmltrans/u=www.bbc.co.uk@2Fh2g2@2Fguide/c=0
Any page can be displayed by replacing the text in between "/u=" and "/c=0" with slashes replaced by @2Fs as appropriate.
To see how the Guide looks on a phone, here's a link to Wapsilon preloaded with this page.
