A Conversation for The Role of Assistants in 'Doctor Who' - the TV Programme
A6247145 - What it Means to be an Assistant on Doctor Who
U2006 Posted Nov 25, 2005
Ok.
Have included a list of assistants, and also a little about the dynamic between the Doctor and his assistants and how this changed as the show went on. Have taken everything everyone has said and made appropriate alterations to the article!
Now all i need to do is wait..

I don't have time to read it in full but I noticed a few things.
Firstly, the first bit of Guide ML you use is a subheader. Subheaders are used for breaking down information already contained under a header, so you need to change them to headers.
Secondly, the list of assistants. This would be better if you arranged it as:
The First Doctor: Assistant A, Assistant B etc etc
The Second Doctor: Assistant C, Assistant D etc etc
This will put the position of the Doctor (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) in bold, and they will appear in bullet points.

"Assistants and their Doctor's" = Assistants and Their Doctors
It may be worth mentioning that the assistants are also known as "companions" and (mainly if you were under 10 in the 70s or 80s) "helpers".
For further information DWM did an article about female companions a couple of issues back. There's a lot of good stuff in there (not that you should steal anything of course, but it may inspire you).

Thank you for your help
Thank you Elentari shall do!
Mr. Dreadful, i mentioned the companion thing in first section! Jimster thought it might be a wise idea. I read the article on the female assistants, it was very good! Kinda what motavated me to write this. Though it's my own spin on the role of assistants. Thanks for the advice.

Romana is but one of the many and varid assistants
varid = varied
"Go and find out, stop bugging me. Thing is Adam - time travel, it's like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guidebook, you've got to throw yourself into it, eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers, or is that just me? Stop asking questions, and do it!"
That quote needs to be in the tags, then remove the " quotes.
S Similarly, independence is an important quality
Similarly, independence is an important quality
You list the 4th Doctors assistants as: Aric, Nyssa and Tegan.
and the 5th Doctors assistants as: Adric, Nyssa and Tegan.
Which one is it?Sorry I can't remember.
All of your double quotes should be single-quotes (house style) too many for me to list.
To consider the Doctor Who assistants from a female perspective is quite illuminating. Throughout the program's (= programme's)
history the writers generally have a pretty good idea of what real women are like. Take Peri for example, as she's shouting down the master = master:
Peri - 'I can shout just as loud as you can!'
=
I can shout just as loud as you can!
(No need to list Peri's name as you have already said it's her.
shows that she is tough and yet she never loses an ounce of her "feminine" qualities of compassion and kindness.
=
The blockquote is a sentence in its own right - therefore start the next bit as a sentence.
This shows that she is tough and yet she never loses an ounce of her 'feminine' qualities of compassion and kindness. (Yet I'd just call her a 'strong woman')
Surprisingly the prime example is Romana, who was the fourth Doctor's assistant. An equal to the Doctor in every way she even gets better exam marks than he did.
This doesn't sound right - try this:
Surprisingly, a prime example is Romana, who was the fourth Doctor's intellectual equal.

This is looking good. Some nitpicks:
function.. -> function.
fluctuateing -> fluctuating
Aric ->Adric

Having just started to read through this again:
But whatever you chose to call them, they do serve and important function
=
(drop the "But")Whatever you chose to call them, they do serve _an_ important function
Sorry, RL calls, I'll be back to read it through properly

The show is called Doctor Who, with a main character who is more or less an alien
He *is* an alien (alien to Earth, anyway!) If you're going to say that - you either need to explain where he's from, or link to one of the entries on the character, which explains why he has two hearts
Adric and Turlough are but a few of the men that have travelled with the Doctor.
Adric and Turlough are just a few of the men who have travelled with the Doctor. (Have you room in there for "Jamie"? He was the first Assistant for me...)
= Jamie, Adric and Turlough are just a few of the men who have travelled with the Doctor.
Now to the qualities of assistants which begins with Intelligence. Intelligence is an important aspect in any Doctor Who assistant.
=
Now to the qualities of the assistants: beginning with intelligence, which is an important aspect of any Doctor Who assistant.
A few of the Doctor's assistants were formally educated (Sarah Jane, the fourth Doctor's assistant, was a journalist), but they generally possessed common sense as well.
I don't know why that made me laugh, but it did
The prime example of this is 'Dalek'. In this episode the Doctor comes very close to destroying a Dalek for revenge
=
The prime example of this is 'Dalek'. In this episode the Doctor comes very close to destroying a Dalek _in_ revenge
Throughout the program's history = programme's
This wasn't the case on Doctor Who. On Doctor Who, however, the assistants need the best of both 'male' and 'female' qualities to function, just as in real life.
You put "however" after the second "Doctor Who" as if you're talking about something else, which you aren't, so drop the "however"
=

but that is also part of the program's appeal - programme's (program is the American spelling)
Never let it be said that the assistants are useless! - I've never heard that said - and it comes across as personal opinion, and the previous sentence is a good one to end the paragraph, so I'd suggest removing that.
'Grandaughter Figure' - Granddaughter
Though it's not just about teaching them the Doctor has genuine enthusiasm for the universe and want's to share it with them.
Though it's not just about teaching them, the Doctor has genuine enthusiasm for the universe and _wants_ to share it with them.
occasionally even being allowed a Doctor-Like role at points
=
Doctor-like
That'll do for now
Well done, this is shaping up nicely
to the loo (all that )

I also think that the first bit (the Doctor Who + time travel etc) needs to be a seperate paragraph.

Thank you very much Elentari! Have changed the article, i agree that it does look better with it's own paragraph. I'm still trying to decide if i need to include where the doctor is from..
