Entry: In Living Memory: Part 1, pre-1960s - A61210559 Author: RodtheBrit - U2465093 In Living Memory: Part 1, pre-1960s These snippets are collated from the *In living Memory?* thread at http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F19585?thread=7042960&skip=0&show=20 There are three more articles - part 2 (1960s), part 3 (post-1960s) and *Things We Remember* for many of the contributions that didn't meet the original intention quite closely enough. While hoping that it will meet with approval, I am aware that it may not but it is, I believe, important to retain the informal *as it was told* flavour -I"ve tried a couple of other approaches but to my eye they became insipid. Hi Rod
This makes interesting reading, but I'm not sure it's suitable for the Edited Guide. For one thing, as new Resaerchers join, they may want to add their memories, so it would constantly need updating.
However, <./>ThePost</.> may be interested in running a regular slot for 'In Loving Memory'.
Let's wait and see what other suggestions you get.
Please do this one thing as soon as possible - change the 'single quotes'. Not sure how you see them, bit I see them all like this - ÒThings We RememberÓ - it kinda spoils the reading a little.
Good Luck
Emmily

That is fascinating Rod, and leaves me with an appetite for more anecdotes, so I think would be ideal, bringing it gradually up to date. So much of our history is ignored now and anything which reminds us of past events has to be a good thing.

I agree- but I can't help thinking that it is the sort of lovely entry that would be an excellent piece in the EG as well.
I would be tempted to see what The Editors think..

Emmily & Websailor - thank you. I've played with the quotes.
You both and Dr Zen & Alex -
I suspected would be the place, but I too felt that the EG could benefit...
I'll hang on here for a while before offering it to
Thanks

Websailor - thanks.
a- "s out & & around the Indians bit.
b- I've added a little, about cutting them to appropriate lengths, immediately prior.
(was that what you meant? The 6' x 10" style I thought was pretty standard...

Rod, I think Websailor was pointing out where you still had the rogue Ó left.
I'd already read the Entry, so I only glanced at the first paragraph, and thought you'd sorted them all out.

Emmily was right it was the rogue Ó that appeared five times in the bits I highlighted.
Thanks Emmily. It is amazing what you miss when you have written it yourself isn't it Rod?

After a run in the post (asking for additions if you wish) why cant the articles be combined and edited into one of the most interesting series of articles of this kind anywhere on the WWW.
This would also suit both schools of thought and make a fine addition to the site.

Bob,
Yes, I'd go with that. They do seem to have some er, importance (to my mind)
However, I'd have trouble editing them into EG style - They're currently as close as I'm happy with (trying to retain some flavour of the informal, the conversational ... )
Would you like to have a look at the others?

No need to call yourself names Rod but the rogue Ó is still appearing in the pieces I highlighted.

They all look good it reninds me of the BBC WWII memories project perhaps the format could help with this series of entries and post articles.

websailor, I'm
I'm on a MacBook Pro
My father always said he'd give me back to the Indians if I didn't quieten down in the car.
- is what it says in my editor (Neo Office) and that, (GML) is just what it does in the entry.
Previously it was
"give me back to the Indians" and that was just what it said.
there are two single quotes - he'd and didn't.
No extraneous quotation marks (but see below)
Similarly, there's 6' x 10" as in 6ft x 10inch - etc. Again, nothing extraneous, editor or entry... now the below bit.
I changed to Neo Office because under Open Office I was getting what looked rather like ”" ( an i circumflex then ") instead of just " in some (not all) cases. Since using Neo Office, no problem visible from here.
I shall now (manually) re-type the sizes sentence in the Guide editor, before posting this reply...
Done. Now please tell me if the sizes sentence is OK - and what about the indians (which I haven't changed here)?
If the sizes are ok and the indians bad then I have a problem...
- - - -
Please may I change the indians bit back to italic with quotation marks? (retyping the whole sentence if necessary)

Bob, I've had a quick look and will peruse it later.
First impressions are that:
Ours aren't so heavyweight.
We'd need to expect an awful lot more to make that worthwhile.
Our stuff is in the main, at least so far, snippets from different folk ...that format would seem rather too busy?
- and yet...
Let's see what thinks.
I picked up a lovely story from an older man, only to find...
I wonder why it was closed? perhaps ... ah well.
