I have looked out some hotels which might be suitable for you. Next Saturday we shall go into Mannheim and check them out. If you have any particular requests regarding hotels, please let me know during this week. Of course, I need to know how many of you are needing rooms, in order to check that there are enough free.

There are a couple of websites which give you a better deal on some of the hotels, so I'm bearing that in mind and will give you details of everything next weekend.

Large breakfast, your own bathroom. And somewhere relatively easy to park a car (I don't mind paying extra for a hotel parking lot).

Speaking of it, do you know off the top of your head if Mannheim has an Umweltzone?

Gnomon - time to move on

I'd like a single room somewhere in Mannheim; I don't necessarily need a good breakfast, as I can survive on coffee.

Yes it does - I nearly drove there a couple of years ago just after they'd introduced it and we didn't have the sticker. Jammed on brakes, did U-turn, nearly fell in the Rhine, drove back to Ludwigshafen, parked car there and went to Mannheim by tram.

We have a snazzy new car now with all mod cons and a badge and anyway, I think you'd need it for Ludwigshafen as well now!

Parking - I hadn't thought of that. Will check that for you.

Simpost with Gnomon.

Rooms required:

1 for toybox with parking
1 for Gnomon- breakfast not important (to cater for everyone, it will probably be a place with a good breakfast, but I've never been to a hotel in Germany where there wasn't a good breakfast)

I'm the same as Gnomon. Not bothered too much about breakfast but I do like to have my own bathroom. (free internet would be a bonus...)

Some of the places I've seen only have a limited number of rooms left. You may have to split up. Prices range between €50 and €80+ Euros.

If my offer of accomodation with fellow hooter is still OK; i'd prefer that, but if not, a cheap hotel, preferably a ground floor room, near where the hootoo action is taking place please...i have a wonky leg!

Have sent you an e-mail, zendevil. Actually it was on 1 March. If you e-mail me back telling me where your MIL lives, I'll work out the transport for you.

OK folks - I promised I'd look at hotels on Saturday. I was sure there was no choir practice on that day, but there is, so I shall go to Mannheim on Sunday. Am looking forward to it - trying beds and sniffing out restaurants for you all!

Has anyone heard from MMF lately?

He'll book his flights by the end of the month from what I understood. He'll stay at my place, as it now looks unlikely that my sister will make it, and we agreed that we'd find a solution should she make it after all. smiley - ok

OK, thanks for the info. So are you both going back to Frankfurt on the Saturday evening or will either or both of you require accommodation in Mannheim?

Right - I've printed out a long list of suitable-sounding places in Mannheim, hotels, B'n' B's and restaurants.

Will try and find the following

smiley - biro Somewhere with board and breakfast with 5 - 8 rooms still free for the night of 24-25 April. Central location. Parking. Clean, airy rooms. Internet access. Not over €70.

Failing that, two places, perhaps of different categories with at least 3 rooms free each.

smiley - biroA restaurant to suit all tastes and purses for the Saturday lunchtime with plenty of room for a group of at least 12. There's a famous vegetarian place right near the station which I think would be a good choice, unless there are any compulsive carnivores among you. It might be a bit loud, though, so I'll check that out today.

smiley - biroA pub for a cosy evening, possibly with live entertainment, otherwise typically German (refectory tables, smiley - ale by the litre(!), hearty meals of whole pigs' legs!)

smiley - biroWill also check tram routes and ticket prices (haven't used these for some 30 years, except the time above where I mentioned that I had to leave the car in Ludwigshafen.)

Of course, in return for my efforts, I'll expect you to gen up on Schiller and Mozart and the Electors Palatine. smiley - winkeye If you can't manage that, a knowledge of the alphabet will prove invaluable. The rest will fall into place!
