A Conversation for 'Withnail and I'
How? Where?

How did you know I had a name, and where did you find it? I (me) always thought it wasn't even in the credits!
This is a great entry, I's terror over Monty is hilarious.

On another Withnail and I website:
[URL removed by moderator]
it names him as Marwood, and so do all the other sites that are linked to it, it isn't in the credits-he just comes up as I so I don't know where they got it from but it is widely believed to be correct so I put it in as it was easier to refer to a name than 'I'
Thanks for your comment, I love the bit where 'I' () describes how he has got cramp in his jaw from smiling at Monty

Sorry, I'm new but I thought you could put links if it was relating to the topic? It's not my site that I'm advertising (and I have seen a lot of those) so could you explain why it has been removed so I don't make the same mistake again.

I think I'll look into where the name Marwood comes from, as it seems a shame to give him a name, imho. I liked the idea that he was nameless. If you ever think of putting this through peer review it might be an idea to mention that.
And no one can put links in conversations or journal entries, only guide entries.

oh right, thanks for clearing that up
I was thinking that I would submit this when I have edited it a bit. Thanks for the 'Marwood' suggestion, I would be really interested to know what you find out.
Thanks again

I found what you did, that every site calls him Peter Marwood. I emailed one of the site webmasters that had a really good site, so just waiting for an answer now.
I hope you didn't think I didn't believe you, I had never seen it before. I realised while I was looking around it might have looked that way.
Nah,
Arwen Posted Aug 7, 2001
Don't worry, I didn't think that, I realise that things need to be verified.
Peter huh? I didn't know that! Any ideas as to Withnail's first name? (Desmond Wolfe )
I've changed my entry
Arwen Posted Aug 7, 2001
I've changed my entry until the name Marwood is definitely verified as being the 'I' character. Let me know when you receive a reply
Thank you!
Arwen
I've just thought of something else...
Arwen Posted Aug 7, 2001
In Richard E. Grant's film diaries ('With Nails') he only refers to 'I' as 'I' and not Marwood. This leads me to suspect that that was how Bruce Robinson refered to him, what do you think?
The more I think about it the more I like the idea that the 'I' character is nameless as it is told from his perspective and is semiautobiographical. Hmmmmmmmm.
(I promise to stop posting now! )

The script was brought out as a book, with an intro written by the author, I tried to find out what he said about it but couldn't. I'm not at home right now, when I get a chance (maybe tomorrow) I'll go back to the site and see if Withnail had a name.
And I'll let you know when or if I get a reply to that email.
You didn't need to take it out because I hadn't seen it before you know! But it's worth researching. I'll see if I can find a site about the author, rather than the film, that might help.
A ha!
Arwen Posted Aug 8, 2001
I was bored at work again so I looked on the net to see what I could find about 'Marwood'. On Richard E. Grant's site it says that the character 'I' is called Marwood in the screenplay, so I have edited my page again.
but it's been hidden :(
Arwen Posted Aug 8, 2001
Can you tell me what I need to change to be able to put it back? I acknowledged that all the quotes were by Bruce Robinson, what else do I need to do?
but it's been hidden :(
