You seem to have crystallised the majority opinion here. This is pretty much what I've heard from almost everyone this year. 
Perhaps it is slowly becoming time for western culture to review its Christmas practices? Just a thought.
I would hope that nobody wants to go back to the days of the Puritans, when you could get arrested for eating a hot dinner on the 25 December.
