I saw in another entry by you that you are interested in comments on character, useless hound. I found the characters in this to be engaging, more so than the entries of yours I see near the beginning of this list.

Sea Change is not wrong about this one.
The characterisation is excellent. This is precisely what I had in mind with 'expanding the character'. There is a touching vulnerability about her in this piece which is wonderfully conveyed. And it doesn't go anywhere near sentimentality. All through she's as acerbic as ever, and as witty. The gentleness and occasional uncertainty shows but there's no hint of 'out of character'. Beautifully done.
This piece has a lot besides that going for it. There is a more narrative feel to it, very little topic drift, and the point at which you stop is (as usual) very well judged. I'd love to know how the rest of the evening went, you've left me gasping with curiosity. But I suppose it's no bad thing to leave the reader wanting more.
No criticism to give - well I could probably think up some nit picks, but I'm ill and really I can think of nothing at the moment that isn't outright flattery.
Loved reading the thread. Very strange to see the early workings of the UG! Oh, and I knew why flowers get cut on an angle.

Thanks to you both good peeps. I am on a bit of a mission at the moment. Having thought I would enter the beeb sit com competition I bravely dug out some twenty year old radio scripts...Most oddly they weren't as dreadful as I thought they were. Although produced overseas they have never seen the light of day over here so, having decided I needed more practice on general scriptwriting skills, and before I attempt a sit com...am rewriting a couple of them (isn't that script smart thingy dashed clever?) and am going to throw them at the mercy of radio 4. Must be bonkers, far too old to imagine I really could do this as a day job. It's all this adulation addling the solitary brain cell .
Thank you for the vote of confidence...I think I mean boost to confidence.
take care

I'd love to read anything you've got lying around. I get the feeling your range is rather broad. We'd love to see the children's fiction made mention of elsewhere.

What fun!
Sniffles indeed.
Enjoyed the post column by the way, Clarissa is shaping up nicely and indeed sounds nicely shaped . I'll get round to commenting soon, I've been catching up on reading them all to get a fuller overview of your style.
Having fun.
