Yuck.
Have you ever tried Bag Balm? It's a New England idea - and boy, does it work good.
When I lived in Pennsylvania, I really hated the way cold weather made your skin crack.

Oh, just look around - I think Mala and I are up to about 13,000 posts...
Of course, that's the second thread we've started, the other one got too long...
Just keep talkin'.
Speaking of which...what kinds of films do you like? Do you get Netflix? (I'm always looking for recommendations, and people like Nite Owl suggest great movies.)

not actually a big movie person since my is anime but anime film wise anything by "Hayao Miyazaki" is wonderful for all ages. some of his famous releases are "Sprited Away", "Howl's Moving Castle", and "My Neighbor Totoro" which come with both english subtitle options or english voice dub options. if u pay much attention to what movies come out then "Ponyo" was one of the most recent dub overs for the U.S.A.

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen much anime, except occasionally on television.
Do you prefer the dubbed or the subtitled versions? Is listening to Japanese part of the charm of this genre?

formost I'd usually say I'd rather read the subs if only because I mix noises so I can't understand the tv often anyways but with the hayao miyazaki movies the dubbing is so exelent the I only notice the difference when the phrasing is changed slightly to better fit the timing. usually about halfway through the movie. although the first time I watched "porco rosso" (one of his more adult aimed movies story wisealthough still "G" rated) I wnt through the whole thing without noticing I had watched it dubbed and not subbed

a description of him and projects he was a part of. look for movies he directed if you use that to look up movies. you can find some of the movies with other anime at movie rental stores.

Those story lines sound interesting. I can understand the attraction of strong female heroines, and the folktale motifs.
I've seen very little anime, so I'm not sure how you judge it. I can never take animation quite as seriously as live action - I realise there's an actor behind the image, but I have trouble seeing the performance as well.
Do the stories take place in the present, the past, the future? Or some alternate universe? Are they basically 'magical realism' - different rules for reality?

Xarin_Sliron Posted Jan 30, 2010
varies by story. most are just a lil bit in the past since that was when miyazaki did most of the story planning stuff but some are alt universe.

They've declared a snow emergency here in North Carolina. You will laugh - we have about 4 inches.
I'm happy, because now we can sit home and watch an old East German scifi movie from the 70s.

We got a whole 7 inches. This was Friday night. The parking lot is still a sheet of ice.
North Carolina's reaction to snow is to fuss about it, and do nothing until it goes away.
