I think this is as finished as I'm going to get it. There are quite a few who contributed and I don't know how to put their names up.

To credit additional researchers, go to the 'edit entry' window and scroll down until you see the 'set researchers' box with your U-number in it. Enter the numbers of anyone else who contributed in that box, separated by commas, and click 'Set Researchers'. Then update the entry.

As far as style/content points are concerned...

h2g2 house style doesn't go for headers at the very beginning, so 'The beautiful county of Cheshire' will have to go.

The first paragraph is very much your opinion and not impartial - this isn't allowed in the Edited Guide. If you can remove the use of 'I' and also try to word the first paragraph so it's a little more balanced, that would be very good. The same is true for any other portions of the entry that go on about how wonderful Cheshire is. I'm sure it is great, but you can't express opinions like that in the EG!

I'm not sure the population stats at the end are really necessary.

I always like to know about where famous people come from - do you know of any celebrities that hail from Cheshire?

yeys to see an entry on Cheshire, however a few comments

firstly - doesn't need the 1st header, entries should begin with normal txt

- 1st para - house style prefers that you avoid writing in the 1st person.

>>In 1998, The Wirral took on the Cheshire post code, becoming a CH postcode instead of an L postcode. Whether this now means The Wirral belongs to Cheshire or not, is under debate.

post codes denote postal town - in the case of CH Chester (not Cheshire). They are to help the royal mail routing letters and should not be used to determine borders. This is why Glossop, which is firmly in Derbyshire has an SK (stockport) postcode.

Needs something to seperate 19th cent cheshire with modern day chester

>>It is reckoned that more millionaires live in the county than in any other in the United Kingdom.

I thought that it was outside the southeast - Greater London and Hertford I thought had more ?

In the good old days, Bently and Rolls were two differnent companies. And even when they were just 1, Bentleys were more sporting and were generally faster and more agressive. Rolls Royce's main industry is plane engines and have provided engines for everything from Concorde to the Spitfire and Hurricane

>>Nearby stand the magnificant telescope complex at Jodrell Bank whose giant reflector dish dominates the Cheshire Plain. These two great structures were built for Manchester University in 1952-7 and 1962-4

I think relector is slightly misleading. It isn't what an astronomer would call a relector teleschope. It is a radio telescope.

It should be mentioned that the Lovell 1 - which I think is still the largest movable radio telescope in the world is shown in the HGTTG film and the telescope complex is mentioned in the radio show / book

>>second half of the Borough of Crewe and Nantwich -- surely the town doesn't make up half the borough ?!

millionars row - the area south of Manchester Airport that includes Alderly Edge, Wilmslow, Mobberley is home to loads of loads of premiership footballers.

Worth mentioning the cheshire peaks outside of Macc.

Famous peoples I think that Manson are from Chester and Joy Divison / New Order are from Macc.

ad another thing, can you remove that list of towns and villages from the end, because it is obviously copied from somewhere ...

Cottages throughout the county --> if you can tell me this is the name of a town / city / village in cheshire I'd be suprised !

Stockport, Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme are now parts of Greater Manchester

.

Personaly I don't think that we need to have a list of all the towns / villages in the county unless you are going to write about them (a bit too long) or link to entries on each one (which we don't have, and besides that's what the directory is for)

OK...Thanks guys.

I'll work on what you've suggested.

Should I perhaps take it out of Peer Review until I've done some more work? I was told to put it in there because someone thought I'd finished it.

No, don't take it out! There have been far less complete entries in PR that have been worked on very slowly for months, so as long as you pop in to tell us how it's getting on now and then it will be fine for you to work on it while it's in here.

One thing you need to do is to rework the first para to remove 'the first person ('I') from it.

'Many Romans received their pay in salt after the colonisation of the settlements ...' > Worth pointing out here that this is were we get the word 'salary' = 'salt money').

Ref early history,as well as Roman roads and Roman buildings in Chester, there are iron-age earthworks, such as Maiden Castle on Bickerton Hill.

There wasc increased prosperity in the 16th-17C's, leading to the building of numerous black and white timbered manor houses.

Notable literary figures who've lived in the county include Charles Kingsley, Mrs Gaskell and Lewis Carroll.

You don't mention Port Sunlight, which Lord Leverhulme planned and established for his workers.

Oops I inadvertently put this into your AWW PR thread.

smiley - erm I was wondering whether it would be an idea to have a separate sub-header of 'Industries', under which you would put salt mining and chemicals, and briefly mention the rolling stock (Crewe), textiles and chemicals (Stockport, Maccledsfield, Congleton), which you've also developed more extensively under those town names?

Gnomon - time to move on

This entry should be called Cheshire, England, UK.

Right. I'm attempting to update the entry, but I've hit the profanity filter for some strange reason.

I can't see what has triggered it but as soon as I know, I'll do the necessary alterations.

In mid-Cheshire, there is the ancient and pretty market town of Knutsford. Said to be named after king Canute, or [Name of King Removed due to the filter] who is believed to have sallied forth to the then 'village near a ford'. The ford is extant. Cnutsford?

Might be worth emailing the eds about this one Vivki, as leaving it out sort of spoils your explanation of where the place name comes from - you might be able to get them to add the word back in after it is picked perhaps.

Nothing. smiley - sadface

But it is an anagram of a rude word (without the hyphen), so the filter blocks it just in case.

I know the other word, but would never have thought that a proper nmae would be blocked. what if you write it with K - which is probably nearer to the name anyway ?
