ZTT Records 1983-1988 Part 2: Discography +
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
Below is a complete listing of all official UK ZTT Records releases from the label's inception in 1983, through the period of their partnership with Island Records, until a new deal was struck with Warner Bros in 1988. Also included are some of the more important promotional (promo)1 items.
For further information on ZTT and reasons why this entends only until 1988 see Part 1 of this ZTT series.
The reasons for this being a UK-centric entry are threefold: (i) All non-UK ZTT releases were made through other major record labels (Island in the US, Polydor in Japan, etc.); (ii) the catalogue numbers of non-UK releases do not follow the established pattern of UK ZTT releases (e.g. most singles being 'ZTAS n', 12"s being '12 ZTAS n', etc.) which make them harder to identify; and (iii) most non-UK releases are identical to their UK counterparts, except for the catalogue number. There are, of course, some notable exceptions to this third reason - these are duly listed alongside the associated UK release.
Releases are listed in chronological order, according to the first release of any of the formats in any country. For example the UK cassette version of Frankie's Relax single was released nine months after the vinyl formats, but for sanity's sake they are listed together here.
The header for each release indicates the artist, the title and the first release date. The data below the header contains the catalogue number, the format and the track listing for each format. The track listings are as given on the record or CD label, not the sleeve. Where the actual playlist is different this is noted. All releases were singles, except where indicated which includes two texts published by ZTT during the period.
ZTT were notorious at the time for releasing a multitude of remixes for each single, often with exactly the same record sleeve and sometimes with exactly the same catalogue number. The list differentiates only between catalogue number, format and track list - different versions of apparently identical records are noted below each entry.
****For further information on ZTT remixes and how to tell them apart see Part 3 of this ZTT series.****
