I asked on "ask h2g2" the same question.

HEH!!! Who's going to hatch the egg then!??
CUTE!!!
Ian M Jefferson Posted Jun 27, 2001
Genetic Mutation implies that an organism can spawn another offspring that is different from the parent, sometimes different in enough ways to give rise to a new species. Hence, the chicken we see today is different from the original chicken type animal, that laid the egg that today's chicken hatched out of! See?? I said I'd need to explain this in person!
OK, what I'm saying is that the chicken type animal that sat on the egg, didn't look like the chicken that came out of the egg!! Hence, the egg came first..
Hell, why do I even bother!!

...it's not a question of the ANCESTOR of the chicken... ::sigh::
It's not genetic mutation... it's a SPRITUAL query... hence!!! CHICKEN!!!
