A Conversation for MMORPG's vs. MUD's
MMORPG's vs. MUD's

There are other differences between text based muds and mmorpgs. While they are not 100% always the case, they are a general rule.
Most MUDs which are decendents of Merc/Diku codes bases are free. They have to be to be licensed. As a result, the time used for developing and building is donated. This includes the server, the web hosting, etc.
Many of these are very unique, and beautiful worlds. All they take is a telnet, or MUD client to run, and you are there (www.zuggsoft.com for an example). While a faster connection is always better, you can run many of them on slower, narrower bandwidth.
Few MMORPGs are free. All the costs that a text mud has, a graphic mmorpg has in spades. And it takes space on your computer, download time, upgrade time, and a very different level of dedication.
Either way, try things out. You can find many muds at www.mudconnector.com or other similiar sites. Try out a few, stay where you fit.
Blessings
