British electoral system - Vote for Change?

Post 1

In all the discussions of the recent election we have heard much about the unfairness of the first past the post system. In Britain we also have a relatively low percentage of people who actually turn out to vote. Why?
One answer that is never mentioned/suggested is that in many costituencies to vote differently from the view of the majority in that seat is a waste of time and effort - its a safe seat! So we need a different system to reflect those thousands whose votes are worthless or who, as I did this time, just stay at home.
Are there any others out there like me? The change I want is to be able to know that I am voting for someone, or in some way, that broadly represents what I believe would be best for all of us. smiley - erm
