A Conversation for Favourite Songs of all Time

Titania (gone for lunch)

...since we're not allowed to post any song titles (I presume?) in any other language than English?

*still awaiting moderation for her latest postings (more than 2 weeks old now) made in Scandinavian, together with - as usual - a complete translation into English... it worked before, heaven only knows why it doesn't work any longer...*smiley - blue

OK, one final attempt, that used to work just a couple of weeks ago (definitely after the BBC take-over)

[to Moderator: I will now name 2 of my 'favourite songs of all time' - they happen to be Swedish, but I will add a translation into English of the titles]

Det vackraste jag vet [The most beautiful thing I know] - Cecilia Vennersten

Balladen om Herr Fredrik Åkare och den söta Fröken Cecilia Lind [The Ballad of Mr Fredrik Åkare and the sweet Miss Cecilia Lind] - Cornelis Vreeswijk

...so am I happy now? No. Why? Because of the inconsistency in moderation...smiley - blue

...it's like a roulette game - sometimes postings in a language other than English together with complete translation into English are accepted, and sometimes not - and I can't see any difference between them, they're all mostly harmless...*sigh*

So it may be, but it's still not nice! There are other languages than English and some important things have been said/written in them!

Hmmm... I don't know what to make of it all as I'm rather new here... but if I might throw in my two cents... or does that have to be pence?

Okay-- fine, my 2 pence then... I was fairly certain that the WWW in the address for this whole site stands for "World Wide Web". "World Wide" being the key to it all.

Obviously it doesn't do anyone any good if we start posting things in Ogklabarian (a little known dialect of the Labarians, which is in itself a strictly spoken language and never written, as Ogklabarian is actually translated loosely as "Not-written-and-generally-meaningless".

I suppose the crux of the matter is this. The targeted audience is English speaking and the goals of the site are not inclusive of other world languages. Too difficult to moderate... For instance, where on earth would you find someone to check the Ogklabarian postings, if indeed it were possible to post anything in that particular language? If one Labarian said another Labarians posting was offensive, how would you determine if it is, indeed, offensive?

So-- being new, I'll just point those little issues out, and hope that I've actually understood the clearly English postings so far and that my response is not way off mark, or even possibly offensive in some other rare dialect of the Whosamadinger Whatchamacallits!

Cheers!
Lars

Well, Lars, the point is that many of those of us who were around pre-BBC (which happened only a couple of months ago) had become accustomed to be able to post in any language they wanted, leave as many external links in their conversations as they wanted, and use your own pictures on your user page... and this had been going on for almost 2 years...

...of course it sometimes happened back then that someone posted something offensive, but of course other users then objected loud and clear...

...I really don't think the Linda-button makes much sense (that ugly little face in lower right corner) because, if there is an offensive posting, the moderators will probably have hidden it before you get a chance to use it... they don't trust us users to object...

I agree that the ban on other languages is daft, I was posting in French to be deliberately awkward.

There used to be six thousand different languages spoken on this planet, and currently many of them are gone or are dying out as a result of everybody using English. The BBC policy is a form of genocide as far as I am concerned.

Well, I've been given the explanation that if the Moderators are familiar with foreign words/quotes, they'll allow it, but if they don't know it, they'll hide it.

How come the Moderators know the Finnish word for 'beer' but not for 'towel'? This is an example of what I see as inconsistency...

Yes, it leads to some rather ad hoc rulings.
