Hello,

Another great entry Gnomon. This should have no problem making it into the edited Guide.

Yours,

I concur.

Although here's a question -- what were the writings found in ogham about? i.e., were they accounts (like many of the Egyptian writings), histories (like many of the Roman writings), grocery lists, love letters? This inquiring mind wants to know!

Great entry!

Another argument for the Roman-influence camp: 4th century AD was about the time St. Patrick came ashore. He is well known to have been versed in Latin.

Nice entry Gnomon. Surely there must be other anti-Roman derivation arguments apart from the letters being in the wrong order which does sound pretty weak to have sustained a controversy. Maybe something from the geographic distribution angle? Certainly the only examples I've seen were in the far South West of Ireland.

Pay attention, Mikey. If you had read the article carefully, you see that I said the inscriptions are normally just people's names.

I'll think about it and come up with a few more reasons against the Roman origin.

Thanks everyone. I've made a couple of changes to the "arguments for and against" section.

Apologies to anyone who tries to read this in Netscape - those diagrams don't work at all. They look OK in Internet Explorer 5. When it is approved, the h2g2 artist will fix it up with a proper diagram.

I've added the tree names to the table of letters, but I'm not sure whether this makes it more informative or just more confusing. Has anybody any ideas?

I like the new version. IMHO, the tree names are a good, informative addition.
