I reckon its got something to do with traditional national colours.
The standard German black and white strip is definitely Prussian in origin (a bit like France and Italy and their national flags represented in their 1st strip).
So is the green and white based upon the colours of another German principality?

Just thought I'd register my presence. Unfortunately I can't even think of a witty answer, let alone one that might actually be right.

Apart from the fact that the colours of Bavaria are black (or maybe blue) and white so if it is a region it's not bavaria.

The story I heard is that after the 2nd world war Germany's first international match was against Ireland. As a mark of thanks to the Irish for being the first nation to play them they adopted their colours.

Another sterling performance from Steviebab ... the first nation willing to play against Germany (or West Germany as they had become) following WWII was Ireland and as a mark of thanks, the Germans adopted the green and white kit as their second choice.

Well done Steveibab, have a point and a smiley - stout
