How about the West Auckland football team who won that European competition back around 1905. They beat Turin I believe.
No doubt you're refering to just the UEFA Competition

Did some sneaky Englishman slip into the Celtic team in 67 (or 8)? I thought the whole team was born within 30 miles of Glasgow or something, but...

Yeah, thats the line I was working along, but I've not found anything yet....
Celtic winning the European Cup is one of the forgotten/black hole facts in football history. Everyone in England thinks that ManU were the first "British/English speaking" team to win it.

I think that the first Englishman to appear in a European Cup final was as a referee. It was probably that Mr Reader or Jack Thingy (Taylor?) from Wolverhampton.
