Question 047
Eusebio - squad number 11 Started conversation May 22, 2001
What was the quarrel the referee had to sort out before the teams would take to the field in the inaugural World Cup Final between Uruguay and Argentina in 1930, and what was his solution?
*sorry I haven't been able to post a question for a few days!*
Question 047
Ormondroyd Posted May 22, 2001
Hmm... There could have been a colour clash, as both Uruguay and Argentina's traditional strips involve a lot of sky blue. So was the argument about who should change, and did the ref tell both teams to wear their second strips?
Question 047
GreyDesk Posted May 22, 2001
Developing the theme, how about one team wore their home kit and the other the away for the first half of the game, and then switched to their alternate kit at half time.
Question 047
Mycroft Posted May 22, 2001
I don't know if this is anything to do with the answer, but one of the Uruguayan players, Castro, had only one arm. I only mention it because the guide's currently lacking an entry that says 'mostly armless', and I don't think it's complete without one.

Steviebab (Squad No. 8) Posted May 23, 2001
Well, I know the referee was Belgian and that he insisted on having his life insured before agreeing to ref the game, but I don't know what the hassle was he had to sort out before the match could start. I suspect that Ormondroyd is right (again).
On a similar vein, why was the start of the 1974 final delayed?

the 1974 final ... hmmm ... I'm thinking .
I do know however that the 1970 final was delayed by a few minutes as Pele had been paid by Puma to tie his laces JUST as the game was due to start, therefore the whole world was looking at his Puma boots - has to be the best maketing ploy ever!!
Question 047
Orcus Posted May 23, 2001
Mad guess but was it who was going to kick off first and his solution was to toss a coin?
Has to have started sometime eh?
Question 047
Steviebab (Squad No. 8) Posted May 23, 2001
Neither team would come out onto the pitch first so the referee made them come out together
Question 047
Gedge :-) Posted May 23, 2001
Was it that they couldn't decide which ball to play with, so they played each half with a different one.
Gedge
Question 047
Eusebio - squad number 11 Posted May 23, 2001
... and well done Gedge
Both sides wanted to use their own ball and the ref decided to pay a half with each ball!!!
have a point and a Gedge ... and even though it wasn't an official question, I think BBS deserves a point and a for his 1974 answer too!

Oh dear, with free points and now being given out, the field is bound to catch up fast and swamp me. I told you I was expecting a "Blades moment" anytime soon...
