Does it matter? Does anything? I know it's a bit Marvin, but 42 sounds good and if nothing else gives people something to think about when they have nothing else to do.

The number 42 had no other significance in Douglas's life other than that it was his age when his daughter Polly was born.

Easy:
HE WAS DRUNK
It is a random number he chose while drunk.

Nothing to do with multiplying or anything like that.

However, scientists do beleive now that Adams might have been right!

The book answers it doesnt i? The earth is built as an attempt to ask the right question. 42 is meaningless so you can always find clever reasons for it, which are equally meaningless, oh, and lets face it, it is a bloody good joke, when the book came out, everybody was saying 42 in answer to absolutely everything. This is why Douglas Adams was so brilliant and clever and funny. We are descended from the B ark.
