when did we start laughing?

I often wonder what makes us laugh. Not as in; "what's your favourite comedy programme" but why if we see something funny we almost involentarily start to chuckle. My main question may be answered quite simply or may even be unanswerable, it is this; if a couple of cavemen had been creeping up on a mountain goat or such and one of them was about to throw his spear, if he then tripped on a rock and speared the ground three feet in front of him, would caveman number two be rolling around the floor laughing his head off?? Answers to variations on this theme would be most welcome. Is laughing a technically describable reaction to a mildly shocking or surprising event?

Hello Dan,
All primates show pleasure and have their own version of laughter
If you want to take this question further, perhaps you could put it to <./>Askh2g2</.> where others more qualified might reply
