Angband - The Computer Game
Created | Updated Sep 21, 2005
Angband is a Tolkien based roguelike game. For those who are not familiar with these types of games they use ASCII graphics to generate a dungeon exploration/ monster killing game
In Angband you are represented by a @ symbol 1 and travel around the dungeon fighting lots of monsters (alphabetic characters in various colours) by either running into them, shooting them or zapping them with an array of spells, wands and magic deveices.
The objective of the game is to travel through the dungeon amassing experiencce, equiptment and (less importantly) treausre. Eventually you will have to fight and kill Morgoth (the Dark Enemy of Middle Earth) in order to win the game2.
Along the way you'll encounter lots of other monsters that have a huge variety of nasty ways to kill you, and will need to develop all your skills to kill them
This may all sound rather tedious, but is in fact incredible addicitive3.
Where can I buy this game
You can't. It's free4 The best link is the (offical?) Angband page at Thangorodrim where Angband and a whole host of variants can be downloaded.
Where does the name come from?
Angband was the name of a Morgoth's prison of iron in J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarilion.
