A thoughtful review, which I agree with totally.
The people who complained that the aliens at the end were a cop out, didn't get the point of the film.
The surface aspect of the film was the exploration of outer space, but the subject of the film to me was the exploration of inner space. To have a 3 headed mutant alien slobbering acid would have detracted from this.
The last thing I want to add is that, for the first time in many years, this was a sci fi film that had me wondering what was going to happen next. When Foster's character sat in that chair and was ready to drop, you just didn't know whether the outcome was going to be good, bad or bittersweet or what she was going to encounter in the next 5 minutes. I loved that.
In an age of TNG Treks, Wars and Shoot em up aliens in general (though I love all of these too), give me more stuff like Contact: I like a little mystery and discovery in life!

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
