Entry: Welsh International Football - A525593
Author: Mickey Thomas' Right Foot (Come To The Footy Quiz at A532243) - squad number 11 - U162376

I went looking for something on Welsh football whilst working on some World Cup-related Entries, and found this. It isn't perfect: there's an obvious typo in the opening paragraph ('Wesh' for 'Welsh') and it would probably be better if some of the footnotes were included in the main text. It also discusses nothing after 1980 - the author admits in an attached Conversation that he simply couldn't bear to think about the Welsh team's recent decline! smiley - bigeyes

But I do think there's the basis of a very useful Entry here, even if it could perhaps do with a little more work. There's a lot of information there. The author rarely visits h2g2 these days, but I've co-written things with him before and could posssibly expand this piece a little.

Then again, maybe that's not really necessary! What do you think? smiley - smiley

Recent delcine. 1958 is a long time.

I think it does need the rest post 1980 there have been some near misses and glorious moments all the same. The fact that they had Sparky, Giggsy, Rush et all and still failed to acheive anything. Even with Southall in goal.

It does however need to be completed no matter how painful. For example once I get around to doing Northern Ireland I will go beyond 1986 and Brazil. Honest. smiley - smiley

And of course there is that famous Welsh Wizard, Vinnie Jones smiley - injured

It would be nice to see this is the guide at some point in time, but with the impending arrival of the World Cup haven't you, Ormondroyd, got bigger fish to fry with the World Cup Uni project?

I agree that the footnotes should be incorporated into the body of the text. There should also be some more detail as to recent achievements (or lack of) for Welsh football. As it stands the history of Welsh football seems to have ground to a halt 20 years ago.

'...the history of Welsh football seems to have ground to a halt 20 years ago'? Some might say that's pretty much what did happen! smiley - winkeye But yes, I agree that some more recent info should be added.

As regards the World Cup University project: I've finished work on the seven Entries that Anna asked me to sub-edit and/or complete. I sent the last of them to her this morning, along with a message in which I offered to write more for the project in the next few days. I'm still awaiting Anna's response, so I don't know if I have bigger smiley - fishsmiley - fish to fry right now or not! But at worst, I could work on this Entry next week. smiley - smiley

No mention that their home ground in one of the finest in Europe? Not to mention their swanky jerseys smiley - winkeye.

No mention of the recent victory over Germany? Hope for the future?

Giggs? Rush? Southall? Hughes (now the manager)?

Hey, it was a patriotic Welshman who wrote this Entry! smiley - biggrin

I agree with you, though. If I end up adding to this, I'll try to say some positive things to say about the last 20 years!

Just for the record, I am now frantically working to complete the abandoned World Cup project (only another eight Entries to write... smiley - bigeyes). So I won't be able to work on this before the back end of next week. But in the meantime, any suggestions for how this Entry could be developed will be most welcome. smiley - smiley

Er... smiley - huh Vinnie Jones played for them and they lost a lot. I am not necessarily suggesting that one caused the other. smiley - winkeye

They beat one of the World Cup finalists just before the World Cup. Surely that's something?

True enough, Ste. I was only joking! smiley - winkeye

I think I'll withdraw this entry from Peer Review for now, since it obviously needs more work. I'm going to be pretty busy over the next two weeks, but hopefully I'll be able to get back to it pretty soon. smiley - football

Hi all.

Thanks for the comments whilst I've been away - I quite fancy taking this on and making it better - your suggestions (bar the 80s) would be gratefully appreciated

Good to have you back, and I'm sorry that I never did get round to working on the entry. smiley - blush I'm sure you'll want to add something about the recent successes in the Euro 2004 qualifiers! smiley - ok

My suggestion would be that you wait to see what happens in Moscow.

Of course if everything goes according to planned and Wales qualify, you might want to hold off writing anything until the outcome of the Euro2004 is known!
