At almost all major sporting events on Terra Firma, there is an action that can unify tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of people. This is called the wave. It has the brilliant name for a simple reason, it looks like a wave.
How do I participate in "The Wave?"
That's rather simple. You must have more people than you probably know: preferrably 20,000 or more (there has been accounts of waves of only 2 or so people, but this hasn't been clinically proven). One group of people must stand up, throw their hands in the air, and sit back down within about 2 seconds (preferrably gracefully). This is followed by a smooth transaction in which the adjacent group does the same. This goes around and should look like a rolling wave.
Is it just me, or is this a bit stupid?
It's not just you. Many people who go to sporting events and simply sit through the wave. Others, like myself, do what I call a "Half Wave". This is where you may stand up some and throw your hands up, or you could simply throw your hands up while remaining idle. Although, the majority of people at sporting games are more neanderthalic than the mass population. Therefore, they get pleasure out of simple, mindless things like "The Wave"; XFL Football; and Strongman Competitions. For these people, we have "The Wave".
How does this start?
This action can start in many ways: someone being pressured by their peers to start it, a drunk embarassing his peers by starting it, or often times a mascot of sorts being payed to do it.
Why do people do this?
I've narrowed it down to two possiblities: to bring thousands upon thousands of people together as a project to encourage world peace a little bit at a time because the love of life and of other people is so strong that it makes the initiator's eyes water to think of not wanting to please your neighbor OR it looks cool.
