Missing Persons

IMSoP - Safely transferred to the 5th (or 6th?) h2g2 login system

As I just mentioned over somewhere at the end if that big long thread, we now seem to have 200 registered Zaphodistas!
However, looking around at this drew my attention to some early posts in that thread, suggesting people who have joined up, but aren't listed / are no longer listed. Namely:
smiley - pirate Mr. Cogito ( U161008 ) [who makes no mention of us in name or U-space]
smiley - pirate Peta! ( U24 ) [did I miss some complex piece of politics here?]
smiley - pirate Shadow ( 133044 ) [who has now left h2g2 in disgust!]
This last one (who's name I can't display properly in a forum posting! smiley - smiley) made me think of another issue: being Chief Alphabetiser, I have a tendency to want to make lists, but how about a register of researchers known to have left h2g2 in disgust/frustration/etc. - I suspect there are a fair few around (or rather, no longer around!).
What do you think?

Increase Mathers,
(I must get around to making an alphabetical list of my titles...)

Peta quit long ago, along with a half dozen others. See the conversation thread http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F63734?thread=106893 This was prompted by a protest I wrote in a conversation thread at the bottom of DNA's welcome page. This post can still be seen off h2g2 at the "Nowhere2Go2" site (n2g2) under the Zaphodista discussion thread. Peta felt I had gone too far and didn't want to be associated with me or the Zaphodistas anymore. A few others followed her. Keeping track of people is more difficult now. Instead of spelling out their names at the bottom of the Zaphodistas page, I found a way that you can give a more current listing by using which will display the current nickname of that person. For example, if you add "member of Chess Club" to the end of your nickname, then this will be added to the end of your listing on the Zaphodista page the next time anyone in h2g2 views it. It's a nice effect, but anyone who decides to change his/her name substantially may be difficult to track down on the Zaphodistas page. For example, "Unmentionable Marauding Pillowcase" changed his name to "Grief, Despair." Anyone searching for "pillowcase" during that time would not see his name, or anything like it, on the Zaphodista page. Would that trick work in the dropdown box list, or do the names have to be spelled out? Never mind -- that would totally mess up your attempts at alphabetizing the thing. I'm not sure if there's an easy way to search for U# on the Zaphodista page, unless you get into the Source code and search for it there. RE: a list of people who have dropped out of h2g2. Fragilis kept track of some of these. You might see if she has a good list. This would be interesting, but sounds like a difficult list to maintain. Another problem is that, unless they're vocal about leaving in disgust, it's hard to tell who is motivated to leave by disgust, apathy, finding a different forum or hobby that they like more, major life events or priorities that reduce or eliminate their free time for posting on h2g2, etc.

Just to complicate things, what about those Researchers (like myself) who leave for weeks/months at a time, disgusted with the BBC, but keep coming back because they love the community? I've left several times in the past few months, but keep finding myself returning to the fold, despite restrictive policies.

The good portions of H2G2 (the Researchers, the information exchanged) call to me. If only our previous freedoms could be restored...free use of "foreign" languages, freedom to express controversial ideas...freedom to behave like the (hopefully) responsible adults that we are.

How many other Researchers find themselves in this same moral quandry?

I've committed to writing no more guide entries until the restrictions are removed, and I thought I would use h2g2 less for conversations. But the people here make it worth while to stick around, in spite of the censorship.
