This is a good addition to the EG, Alex, and possibly too specialist a topic for the reviewers, but it deserves recommending because I understood it, and I'm not a medical person smiley - smiley

Sho - employed again!

Interesting article.

I have a question. In the first part you say:
'It is, however, known that women who become pregnant following oral contraceptive use, fertility treatment or sterilisation are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy.'

Do you mean that women using those contraceptive devices who become pregnant are more likely than not to have an ectopic pregnancy? Or do you mean that out of all the women who experience an ectopic pregnancy, the majority will have been using some sort of contraception?

In the second part - I guess the technical term is 'tubal abortion' - but you mean something that happens without medical intervention? Because, and it could just be me, I understand 'abortion' to mean that it is intended, however provoked.

Fascinating entry, though. Thanks.

<> when I suffered a miscarriage in 1982 I was most distressed to read "spontaneous abortion" on the letter the hospital gave me for my GP. I had to ask, that they didn't think I'd done anything to provoke the loss of the baby and was told it was the correct medical term. So abortion to me means removal of foetus - by nature or medical intervention.

"the majority will have been using some sort of contraception"
I don't quite see how you could infer this from the sentence, but I've changed it to try and make it clearer.

I've made those changes smiley - ok

thanks Alex smiley - ok

GB - it's not that I didn't know about spontaneous abortion (having suffered one myself smiley - hug) it's just that it's not often used among lay-persons to refer to something like this. At least - that's how I see it. Of course if I'm a minority, I'm happy to be corrected.

Thanks for clarifying, Alex, but the footnote is missing a word:

<>

=

This refers to the spontaneous ending of an ectopic pregnancy, and is not to be confused with the common usage of the (term/word) abortion, which refers to the intentional termination of a pregnancy.

Well I hope Alex doesn't add specific women who this has happened to, which seems a gross invasion of privacy to me.
