Shame on me, because even after all these years it somehow escaped me how this all actually works. I discovered at some point (when I had a nosey around both areas) that the AWW and the UG are two completely different things, but I'm not surprised that many people never find out. Now you said that the point of the AWW is not like PR, and I agree. However, maybe you could say that the UG is for people's writing (fiction, poetry) what the EG is for factual entries?
Only that it's much harder to get something published in the UG )or that's my impression, anyway. ), so in other words: you can't submit a piece to the UG directly the same way you can't submit a piece to the EG directly (you submit it to PR).

You've got it.
My point was that, although in PR everybody will keep on until the entry is publishable (if at all possible), in the AWW you can just talk about what you've found, without needing to push that particular piece on to publishability.

That's true. I guess it's why the entry list in the AWW is endless.
It is a bit daunting for me to go in there and look for material for the Post. It would be so much easier if somebody could clear it just a little, by removing articles which have been published for the UG, for instance, or material that isn't deemed suitable for whatever reason.

Hm, that's an idea to take up with, say, LLWaz.
If the UG ones were taken away (after all, they are archived), that might help. Otherwise, though, leaving the unpublished ones there is a way for other people to find them.

I meant articles like you get in PR, too, just saying 'meh' or, 'cheese' or such.

Dmitri Gheorgheni, Post Editor Posted May 1, 2009
You get articles that say 'meh'?
Occasionally, there is that sort of thing in the AWW. For instance, the three-line story idea that 'just came to me in the shower'.
We almost invariably reply with a page-long discussion of the enormous potential this offers...lots of suggestions...
And never hear back again.
I recommend this technique to PR.

Or people who copy down a passage from The Book, submit it to PR, and fail to realise that yes, we've all read Douglas Adams...

(Or things like this recent submission... A50710402 That's another thing Scouts do, telling these people that's not what PR is for without scaring them off the site forever.)

Ah, now that you could send over to the AWW.
We know what to do with rosebuches and red hair and cardinals and suchlike...

I did leave a message that if she (for I presume it's a she) is looking for help writing or constructive criticism, she should show it to you AWW people.

Yes, but you leave them in the AWW and they clutter it all up.
I don't know how many volunteers the UG has, but it does make the impression that there aren't enough. A bit like the Aces: lots on the list, but only about a handful of active ones.

Actually, I suspect we're not thinking that it 'clutters it up' - although I can't speak for anyone actually in charge of anything.
All I do is mine - read stuff, comment on stuff, propose stuff, vote on stuff.
I have nothing to do with how it is organised. (As the Germans say, 'There am I overasked.')

Me? I go back a couple of years...there are treasures in there from before that...
I believe that's why it's called mining.
