Hi!
Did you know that originally the German word "gift" included both meanings - poison and present? I don't. I just learned it a few days ago in university when we talked about a poem by Walther von der Vogelweide... So, I guess, you really learn for life and not for school.

Oh! I didn't know that either!
Just trying.. "Here, have a "
Naaah, I still have to read that with my brain switched into 'English' mode.

Hey, nice to meet you here!
Gift and gift... I wonder if there are other words meaning one thing in German and another in English which originally included both...

that's right. You're out of the affair (speaking Genglish)
err... how about 'minister' which in English is more than a german 'Minister'

yes, to me, 'Denglish' is also better. This is, for example, when one writes text, and uses commas everywhere, where the English never would use them. Or, when one writes the words in another sequence, as the English-speaking people would write.

I know exactly what you mean. I never know where to put a comma. Hey, it took me long enough to know where to put them in German.
And although my English is good enough to say almost everything, it's not like talking or writing in German. All those subtle jokes you can make in your own language... if you know what I mean.

Oh yes I know. All the funny word-puzzles don't work, and it's hard to understand the puns of the English language.
Hey, have you been to Bolle's Berliner Bulettenbude? There's free supply of everything!

Yeah... Like Methos - the "real" one would probably say: Been there, done that.
I was there in my former incarnation here on h2g2 before we all became a part of NBC. Is it still there? I thought now that we aren't allowed to write in german anymore...

it has become a somewhat more quiet place, but it's still there. The sharks are a bit starving because nobody feeds them, but all the rest is ok :-) http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F36649?thread=95200?latest=1

Well, it seems as if it hasn't changed that much in the last - hey, it's been over a year...

it's still that pub around the corner, yes. Only the backlog reads ugly because of all the [****] messages. There was a short time when German *was* moderated (the Towers had somebody who understood it), but all other messages have just been squacked

I noticed that! But the most weird thing is that between all those hidden postings, there are some postings still there - in German! It's a crazy world!

Seems to me as if the Moderator in question had limited abilities and opted for the safe side, killing everything that s/he didn't really understand. The really *bad* thing is that the postings are *deleted* rather than *hidden*. Now they are gone forever, I'm afraid

Deleted? That's bad. You know, in the last weeks I often thought it sad that all the old psotings under my old nickname - pre-NBC - are now lost...
