Mario Lemieux

1 Conversation

Mario Lemieux was inducted into the hall of fame November 17, 1997. Possibly the greatest player to play the game of hockey, he will be remembered for his tremendous talent, his success on the ice, and his resiliance against injuries and life-threatening illness. He only played for one team, Pittsburgh, and wore #66.

Pre NHL

Lemieux was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1965. As a naturally gifted athlete, there are stories of him drawing crowds to watch him play hockey outside on the pond. He dropped out of school at the age of 16 to play junior hockey for Laval, where he had a great deal of success.

Career Overview

In 1984 the Pittsburgh Penguins took Mario first overall in the NHL draft, and Lemieux played the 1984-85 season. He scored a goal on his first shot of his first shift. In the 1984-85 season, Lemieux's rookie year, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL rookie of the year, was named to the NHL All Star game, and was named the most valuable player of the All-Star Game.

In February 1993, after winnning consecutive Stanley Cups, Lemieux left the team to undergo treatment for Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer. He rejoined the Penguins in March and, despite missing 24 of the season's 84 games, was the NHL's leading scorer for the season, with 69 goals and 91 assists. He was also named MVP for the season. He was actually scoring goals hours after receiving radiation treatment for his cancer!
