The mint julep is as fine a cooler as has ever been invented, and served in tall, frosted glasses it looks sensational. The perfect summer party really: juleps on the lawn, with picture hats and somewhere nice to lie down afterwards.
Once the yarn has been recommended then all h2g2's researchers will be able to enjoy a mint julep - and learn a bit more about bourbon whiskey.
And yes, it is summer downunder.
Cheers.

A wonderful tale Looney - the only thing I might add is that I seem to recall that the Mint Julep is the unofficial official drink of the Kentucky Derby horse race (the first leg of the Triple Crown).
Cheers!

Hope you had a good one in sunny NZ.
Where are the other Scouts and why isn't this getting looked at?
Times like this make me question Peer Review...
A lot of the newest entries taken by Scouts were the newest ones submitted to Peer Review. And the number of multiple selections is starting to set my teeth on edge.
But I'll probably open this can of worms in the Soapbox forums on Monday.
Have a good weekend, mate!

Excelent holiday period in Godzone Jimi, thanks

My guess is that most of the Scouts are youngsters who have no experience of the finer things in life. Maybe I should write a yarn on Alcopops... or Coke... or boy/girl bands... it may get their attention.

I agree. How hard is it to read (and retain the information) in an email.

See you there.

Will do and I hope you do as well

I like it - and I'm hardpushed to find anything to criticise about it. The only thing I can think of is that it seems aimed a little too much at the bourbon drinker - people like me who haven't drunk it would appreciate being told what it is, what it tastes like, where it's made, who it's made by, and copious other pieces of trivia.
I like ending with a recipe - it works well

Lucinda, the yarn is, in the main, about bourbon - the taste of which is included - Freed by water, all the tastes of smoke, sweet oak, mealy sour mash and the other harmonies that a good whiskey harbours are available for indulgence and quiet contemplation.
You mix mint juleps yourself (at home) - you don't buy it by the bottle - which is why the recipe is included.
I believe there are copious amounts of Bourbon trivia included. The yarn is also linked to h2g2's Universal Drink Table - a place where further information on alcoholic drinks is posted...
Thanks for taking the time to read it

I did read the bit you quoted... The thing is, that only tells me that it tastes like a good whisky if you drink it with water. Ok... so what does it taste like without water? And how does it, with water, differ from, well, a good whisky? Or are bourbon and whisky so similar you could do a kind of pepsi challenge on them?
I still don't know what it is - is it a type of whisky? a type of scotch? Some of the stuff seems to imply this, but I'm really left unsure... and given that this ain't a murder mystery I don't particularly like having to pick through the entry for clues. Maybe I'm just too much a product of TV
Incidentally, I'm not sure what you thought I was saying - but I meant to say that I *like* the fact that the entry ends in a cocktail recipe - it's a good way to end off the entry - it was a compliment... (!)
Basically, the entry made me feel dumb, because it seemed to assume I knew stuff that I didn't, rather than doing what most entries do - tell me a little stuff I know to start with, and then move on to lots of cool stuff I don't - this one starts off at cool stuff I can't even relate to: I can't recall seeing any bourbon advertising, so being told what it suggests is rather frustrating. Kinda like being told that the Narnia series is based on the gospel stories without having read either the Narnia series or the gospels. Argh - it's so upsetting...

Lucinda, bourbon is American whiskey. I added the following to the yarn...
But, like Scotch, bourbon, a whiskey distilled from a fermented mash containing not less than 51 percent corn in addition to malt and rye,

Perhaps the reason this one's been neglected is because it doesn't have either of the magic youth-oriented phrases in it - 'Pokémon' and 'How to...' (this last one especially in reference to attracting the opposite sex / making money with the minimum of effort)
Nice entry, though. Kinda makes me wish I had the sophistication and finances to enjoy juleps etc more often.
