Is the soil fairly sandy and free-draining where you live? We have a heavy clay you could make bricks from, so I wouldn't have thought of emphasising watering as much as you have done. Plenty of fertiliser isn't usually necessary either in soil like this, but it just washes away in sandy soils.
I *have* heard of fabled, mythical parts of Ireland where it's possible to lift a shovel of sandy soil and not break your back digging it like you do with clay - and they probably exist. I just haven't met them.

KB, I live not far away and some parts are heavy clay, other parts are not so bad. I think each person has to judge from their own soil. It is very varied around here. Gardening is all about learning and gaining experience and everyone has their own views.
My garden is a nightmare. We were the last houses built on the estate and I think we got all the rubble covered by a load of topsoil.
