I like the notion of 'extelligence' discussed in 'The Science of Discworld': thinking isn't just something that goes on inside the head, but built into the whole structure of how we organise ourselves and our environment. (See also theories of 'extended cognition': .)
Are there as many great minds today as there were in the past? Yes, and once in a blue moon they even get research funding...
