This is about the fodder of my country. Someone's already told me it was too short. I think I was going for punchiness and readability for those who don't know about George W.

Have at me, O ye criticks.

I agree that it's a bit short. How about some more stuff on his military career? Also, have you had a chance to check out Colonel Sellers' American Revolution project at the h2g2 university?

It's at http://www.h2g2.com/A415865

Short and to the point. I wonder what the colonel would say about it ?

The Colonel already had a look at this when Bucky submitted it to the University project on the American Revolution. I think it's a definite candidate for expansion, since it doesn't really teach anything about him that the average person doesn't already know, in and out of the US. For one thing, while he was incredibly popular with the people, Washington was not often in the favor of Congress during the war, and there were a couple of times when he was in the process of being replaced. That's the kind of thing the laymen would be interested in learning about.

This article really only says what we already knew. He was a general. He was at the Constitutional Convention. He was a president. Now it needs to tell us the particulars of those roles... how he served, what precedents he set, what achievements he made, etc.

So that's what the colonel says.

Nevertheless, she says that which is general knowledge awfully nicely.

"back to the drawing board"?

*tentatively suggests that a move to the workshop is in order*

about the entry itself...

well: it told me stuff about him I didn't know - Washington isn't a figure of much importance outside the USA...

I'd be interesting in seeing stuff about a bunch of other things, though: allegedly he was a deist, allegedly he smoked cannabis, and allegedly he was assinated early in his life, and impersonated by a fellow named Weishaput. All of which was alleged in the most unreliabele source you can get - but it'd be interesting to find out.

Oh, and the last paragraph feels a touch jingoistic - didn't we (the rest of the developed world) have government by law well before washington abdicated? Wasn't it already one of the principles by which democracy is measured?

Hi Lucinda,

Thought I'd join you for a spot of "bottom-feeding" (referring not to the article itself but to its place in PR until I post this)!

I agree with the Colonel's comments that it could be more substantial (cf Julius Caesar http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A531767). I agree with you that assigning anything unique to Washington's leaving office at the end of his term is a little Americocentric - the US wasn't exactly the world's first republic, nor its first democracy.

And finally I second the suggestion that this be moved to the WW - with a note to Bucky to please make it more readable: using "straight" apostrophes makes it cross-platform; noting that the image tag can't be used for external images any more; and that we should be using ... tags instead of s - http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/GuideML-Clinic has all the low-down.

Editorial Note: This Conversation has been moved to the new 'Flea Market' Forum.

This is where we move any Peer Review, Writing Workshop or Alternative Writing Workshop Conversations where the original author has *not* posted to h2g2 for three months. This prevents the active Review Forums from clogging up with dormant entries, but in the Flea Market they can be picked up by others and polished off.
