Salford born, Methodist preacher's son.

Cambridge educated; edited magazine.

First visited America in 1932.

BBC film critic before move to America, becoming wartime citizen.

First broadcast weekly Letter from America post-war.

Over 3000, some from hospital beds.

February's last letter announced retirement after 58 years.
