may I suggest the following in addition to No. 10:
13: Read the style guidelines. There are soooo many authors who have to be advised to use 3rd person writing instead of 1st.

15: see #13. 'I' and 'we' seems to be *really* frowned upon.

Oh, that's no replacement, just an additions -- some people seem to need that taught with a hammer 
I'll go still one step further:
Rule #16: if you don't want to follow rules 13/14, then rule #10 applies.
