This entry stems from a thread conversation with Fragilis the Melodical who was bemoaning the fact that much of the English speaking world's education system stems from "Victorian Geezers with Beards". Well, it does, and many were British, and there's not much to be done about that from here. However, it was a good point, and it got me thinking about these chaps, among whom perhaps John Ruskin is a personal favourite. I started off to do an entry about him, and got sidetracked, as you see. Linton is a lesser light. But, if a 'lesser light' can do all this, then what hope is there for we ordinary mortals.

I have now added loads of exciting links, and made one or two corrections and additions with a view to making the entry more interesting and relevant, and in the, perhaps vain, hope that someone, somewhere, sometime will read it.

This one I really like. Linton was obviously quite a character, and there are lots of starting-off points for further investigation.
I'm sure it will go far.

Thanks, GVI. The intriguing thing for me is the multi-disciplined, the polymath approach. I wonder how much the specialisations of modern life inhibit contribution and input from good brains. If, for example, Damien Hirst, the artist, chose to write a book about Puffins (for example) how seriously that would be taken as an ornithological text? - Not a good example, but I hope you see what I mean!

Ooh yes of course. We were always told to use a new word on the day we learnt it.... think I'd struggle with that one
I've just come across 'psephology' - it'll take me the rest of the day to pronounce it...
