Major Valentine

Stands there in his uniform, chest puffed out like a balloon.
The buttons polished lovingly, the shoes that shine like glass,
Just waiting for the orders unto his men to pass.
Sergeant Major Valentine holds his head up high.
Nobody would think that when younger he was shy.
He stands there to attention, in his eyes a shining gleam,
He wants to fight for victory, he's intelligent and keen.
Sergeant Major Valentine his country he did save
A name on a memorial, A body in a grave.
His buttons, shoes and uniform behind museum glass
Waiting for the visitors to comment as they pass.
Sergeant Major Valentine - his widow stops to stare
At medals and dress uniform looked after with such care
A museum seemed the proper place for this memory to stay.
A love that's growing evermore because her lover passed away.
