Yes, the outside links thing seems to be a BBC rule - before h2g2 was BBC owned it was fine. It's inconveniant, definately, but we survive!
I'm glad you're enjoying the guide so far - I've found it very addictive! It's quite a pleasant place to chat, and generally talk to people, read various things. But I'm sure you'll find that out yourself.
The best place to find the books, though, is probably at a bookshop. I haven't done any online book shopping, so to be honest I can't really recommend somewhere, sorry.
