Here's a straightforward piece for devotees of the 1930's (Art Deco and all that), and watchers of The Antiques Road Show, should there be such on h2g2.

Your critical appraisal will be much appreciated.

(honest!)

I enjoyed reading this. I don't know much about her pottery so I can't comment on that. It's an interesting story - that she was given the opportunities she was, as a women at that time. Was that entirely due to the first world war? I don't get any sense from this that she was particularly pushy. Not a Mrs. Thatcher of the china works!
I think this definitely deserves a place in the guide.

There is nothing in anything I have read that suggests that she was other than quietly determined. She is described as a dutiful daughter, as religious, taking an active role in Sunday Schools etc. The 'determined' bit is my take on the fact that she went for the opportunity at Wilkinsons very quickly, but that may have been the decorating manager picking up her talent at her evening classes. Once established at Wilkinson she certainly spent much time with Colley Shorter, the MD, who really pushed her career along. What that relationship was, we don't know, apart from the gossip of the Bizarre Girls who seemed to assume there was an 'Affair'. But there is nothing from her or him to suggest it was other than a close working relationship. No, she seems to have 'got on' purely on the strength of her talent.

I think this is a great entry.

It's so good, in fact, that it's been submitted to the editing process. I'm afraid you might be in for a slight wait while the sub-eds do their stuff, but they're working hard, so please be patient! You'll get a mail letting you know when it's going up on site.

Nice work - keep writing! smiley - wow

Actually, it might be quite an accurate word, as (apparently) the subbing process has been speeded up - us scouts are now on to three picks a month each!

**Hollow Laughter echoes round the room** Its just that this will be No. 4 or 5 to be picked up, never to be seen again!

(Don't worry, I have the patience, and I do thank you for your interest. I was actually quite happy with this one, and was hoping someone would notice. Thanks.)
