Setting up and starting Cygwin

I have a linux server (slackware 10.0) and a windoze client. I have tried several times to make heads and/or tails of the Cygwin installation but I have never been able to get it working. Is there somebody who wants to hint me into the correct direction?
Yes, I've downloaded the stuff, I've installed it, but for some reason the connection itself fails (seemingly because something on the server either can't be found, or can't be started).

I'm not sure I understand what are you trying to do with the cygwin stuff?
The basic cygwin provision is a command shell under windows and ports of unix tools.
Do you want to be able to connect from the windows machine to the slackware machine? You don't need cygwin to do that in a basic fashion (or even in more advanced fashions).

The connection I'd like to set up is to use the Windoze machine as a client for X running on the Slackware machine. This way I would be able to use the graphical interface to Linux, but not having to swap screens, keyboards and mice... As I read it, Cygwin would allow me to do that..

In that case have you looked at
http://x.cygwin.com/
and for some documentation
http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html and http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/cygwin-x-ug.html
I did get what I think you want working some time ago but I'm a little rusty on the details now.

I got the install from x.cygwin.com. I guess I have to re-read the manuals in order to find out what I did wrong...
I was hoping for a sneaky quick-guide to getting my cygwin to get to work... sadly I have to do it myself... anyway... I will get through it.. somehow

Does anything happen when you run the startxwn.bat command?

As soon as I got my Windoze up and running again, I will be able to tell you (for some reason my Windoze 98SE decided that it was time to give up working... started timing out HTTP traffic and on reboot VxD NDIS errors reared their ugly heads.. I'll have to restore the C-drive to get it working again...)
