it won't connect through the router and crappy AOL won't provide tech support smiley - cross. If I didn't get AOL free then I most certainly wouldn't be using it now smiley - grr. It knows it's on a network, and that, but it won't connect to the net. I've even switched off the firewall and that didn't help

If it's a standard wired Ethernet connection it usually never fails to work, without configuration. Which distro is it though?

Odd. I have a router - I never have to configure anything to get the 'net to work on Linux.

It's strange, my win 2k box works fine, my dads win xp box won't connect through the router and neither will this linux box I've built
