I just upgraded from Mepis 6.0 to Mepis 6.5 recently so...

I booted from live disk double clicked the Install icon and selected upgrade (thus preserving my /home directories)

Once installed, booted into Mepis on my Hard drive and added a repository from http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ and installed the programs I wanted from the package manager.

** tip always keep a list of what you install, it makes upgrading so much easier smiley - winkeye

next I used the Mepis assistants to set up 3D support for my graphics card, to set up Beryl (3D desktop effects) and my printer.

Then into the settings menu and switch to British English for the user interface, ispell-british for the dictionary and made the Desktop look pretty and set up SuperKaramba.

Next install Oolite using Autopackage.

Finally I compiled a couple of progs from source (special mention here to Yakuake which I would recommend to any KDE user) **tip: When installing from source instead of the command "make install" use "checkinstall".

And that was me set until the next upgrade comes along.

When I uninstalled Ubuntu, I saved my Apt repos list and my marked apps under Synaptic. Good, sound, solid advice. smiley - winkeye

Is Oolite a stripped-down version of OOo? I've never heard of it before.

And is Yakuake the one where you have the Quake-like console drop down? Because I used a similar app with GNOME (then just went for urxvt in Openbox after many recommendations).

Oolite is an Elite like Game http://oolite.aegidian.org/ (game) and http://oosat.alioth.net/ (expansion packs), it open source (free) and available for Linux/Mac/Windoze. The Linux version uses the Autopackage system for installation http://autopackage.org/

Yes, Yakuake is a drop down Quake-like console (and very a pretty one at that).

T.B. Falsename ACE: [stercus venio] I have learned from my mistakes, and feel I could repeat them exactly.

I have Oolite on my Mac, is tres cool...especialy as you can fool it into thinking you have an old BBC keyboard.

Thanks for that. I found the name of the one I was using - Tilda (in fact, my shortcut for it was WinKey+`).

I've also been given several recommendations for mpd, I think it is - the music player. Apparently it's really good (and console-based, too).

Sounds interesting, although I'm not exactly a gamer - love to be, but I'm pretty crap at non-console games. While I'm at it, I'm pretty crap at many console games, too. smiley - biggrin

I remember trying NetHack and a GUI for NetHack as well (can't remember the name - probably something really imaginative like GTKHack smiley - winkeye) and not even being able to move - the keyboard shortcuts made no sense to me.

I'll try Oolite next time I have a chance, though - I'll have to try Battle for Wesnoth then as well.

If your after a console based music player checkout "moc" (music on console) - it gets my vote as it's the only console based music player that I've ever got to scrobble to http://www.last.fmsmiley - spacesmiley - biggrin

moc can found over at http://moc.daper.net/

Interesting - looks like it's got a good UI.

Oooh... there's even a SID plugin. If it has S3M and IT plugins, then I'm sold.

Hehehe... an NES theme. Sounds awesome. Thanks. smiley - biggrin
