Does anyone know of a Linux package that can convert various video media (.avi, .wmv, .mpg) to .mp4...so that I can play them on my iPod?
Preferably one with a .deb alread in a supository somewhere, so I don't have to monkey around with dependencies.
And while we're at it...I've got a pile of .rmj's knocking around, for some unknown reason. Anything that will convert them to .mp3s?
btw - some of you who have been following my baby steps with Linux may well be falling off your chairs at the moment. I still don't know what I'm doing, but at least I can speak some of the language.

Yes there is something, and for the life of me I can't think of the names right now. Much of the Mac stuff is ported from Linux so if you look up things like Handbrake and Forty-Two...
wait a moment, I could just copy the readme from Forty-Two here, it'll be a good start (I think ffmpeg is the one you want to start with:
"The Following components distributed in the folder/directory ("bundle") that encloses forty-two
and discomvobulator plus are binaries from the following and are included for user convenience
when/where possible, and are licensed under the (L)GPL:

vmt.
Because I'm still taking baby steps - and because I'm a 'user', not a techie - I'll be sticking with the binaries.
