A Conversation for Horror Films

Some good horror flicks

Post 1

The Dancing Tree

It seems that some people don't even realise that some of the very best movies (well, mainstrean at least) are actually horror flicks. Alien is a case in point - this is a traditional monster goes round killing people off flick, only it's set in space. And Videodrome is a horror flick, as is the bulk of Cronenburg's stuff. All very good, although none of these yell "horror" on a typical viewing.

And that what's shown is often far less frightening than what cannot be seen:
"The Cat People" from 1943;
"The Legend of Hell House" 1972(?)

Sadly, "horror' is usually applied to the "stalk-and-slash" variety of film which has no subtlety, grace or point to them.
I found "Outbreak" to be far more terrifying because of its implications (where some military people want to test a bacteria's efficiency at killing so they unleash it on a domestic population).

"Threads" was also terrific for that, especially during the 80s when our lunatic leaders made the outcome terrifyingly real and probable..
