Hello
Had a good read - I enjoyed this! I know that it is difficult what with h2g2 chucking pictures out, but I personally think illustrations of the knots would be very helpful - maybe TPTB would make an exception? I dunno.
Also I'd like to see dates if possible.
Hope that is of some use to you

I agree about the pictures. If not allowed then we need more detail about how they look so that we can visualise them better....?

I couldnt see any pics on the page, so I cant really say if this is possible, but have you thought about doing renditions of the knots in ascii art? I did something like this for http://www.h2g2.com/A454871 (an entry on ambigrams).

Herrrmmm... yes, or I could always provide a link outside h2g2 with a really good picture or two or three... until TPTB decide I am worthy... Maybe...

Are there any external links you could provide? That'd also help with the piccies - that way the artistic team could go to the external to find out what they look like...
A bit more background would be nice - these sort of things often have some sort of prehistory associated with them - generally China for some reason...

CHINA-- silk, tea, paper, and gunpowder. That's why China!!!
Silk-- people like pretty things, throughout history!!!
Tea-- people like to have something to drink. It's very social, and healing... oooo... especially warm, flavored water!!!
Paper-- h2g2 is a result of it, truth be told. Paper is EVERYTHING!!!
Gunpowder-- unfortunately, due to wanting the possession of these aforementioned materials, as well as religious differences and/or avarice, we have warfare, which... uses... gunpowder.
So those Chinese have it all under control.
Anyway... I realize there is more research to be done, but as it is, I am maintaining a Musehome, trying to revise three guide entries, attempting to protect royal hamsters(all on h2g2 alone) while performing outside tricks of life.
I will improve this entry, fear knot...(pun intended)...

Other stuff that came from China, as far as I know:
Rice, for risotto or British Rice Pudding;
Pasta
Tomatoes
Can you imagine Italian food without rice, pasta or tomatoes?

I dug an old jigsaw out of the press where it had languished for many years. My daughter and I are now doing it together. She was amazed to see "Made in England" on it. She thought all toys are made in China.

Dragonfly,
(how can I put this delicately without insulting your sensitive nature) how much of this stuff about celtic knots is genuine celtic and how much was made up recently by the new-age hippies who see Stonehenge as a calculator and insist that you can tell fortunes by throwing ogham stones?

My feelings are unscathed...
...you're limited to the sources available at the time being. And, at THAT time being, well, I was limited to those things that do have that crazy hippe element(although, are hippies so bad!??? )... still limited in my sources, I will... someday... find something actual...
Being "Made (partially) In Ireland and Scotland" myself, I want to be geniune... yet at the same time, I like what work I have done within this entry... so I proposed it in spite of the hippies!!!

Dragonfly,
Whatever about the rest, the tree of life is genuine. This motif did occur in many ancient celtic knotwork panels.
